First Quarter Safety Initiative Winner of 2019 Announced

Thomas Family Farms Winner of AgriTrust of Georgia Quarterly Safety Initiative for 1st Quarter 2019

Bogart, Georgia – May 1, 2019 – Congratulations to Thomas Family Farms of Blackshear, Georgia for being named the First Quarter Winner of the AgriTrust of Georgia Quarterly Safety Initiative. Georgia will always be known as “The Peach State”, but there is another fruit that provides a higher economic impact to the state. Georgia’s top fruit is now the blueberry.  Mike Thomas and two of his sons, Michael and Chad, founded Thomas Family Farms in 2011 while they were operating a timber/logging business. They saw a change in the regulations in the timber industry as a sign that they needed to move on so they decided to try farm life. In the eight years since, the Thomas family now owns 300 acres of blueberries in Pierce County and manages 350 acres of blueberries in Clinch County, and they could not be happier. A third son, Jordan, has joined the family business by providing bees for pollination on the farm. Mrs. Terri Thomas manages the business and makes sure the Thomas boys stay safe and busy.  The most enjoyable experience for them is the afternoon rides through the farm they take as a family.

The Thomas family has grown to include eight employees and everyone takes safety seriously. Thomas Family Farms believes that each employee has the right to derive personal satisfaction from his/her job, and the prevention of occupational injury or illness is of such consequence to this belief that safety will be given top priority at all times. Terri has implemented a safety program where the employees have multiple formal safety trainings throughout the month and countless tailgate talks during the work day. For their efforts, Thomas Family Farms was selected as the winner for the AgriTrust of Georgia’s Quarterly Safety Initiative and has been presented with a check for $2,000.00.

AgriTrust of Georgia is a group self-insured workers’ compensation fund that provides workers’ compensation insurance coverage for the agricultural industry in the state of Georgia.  The Quarterly Safety Initiative is designed to encourage all of the fund members to participate in an active safety program.
